DJO's Chattanooga Division Wins Kruesi Award For Spirit of Innovation with Moveo XP

Date

Chattanooga, TN -- DJO Incorporated, a global provider of medical devices that deliver solutions for musculoskeletal health, vascular health, and pain management, announced today that the Chattanooga Moveo was named the 2009 winner of the Kruesi Spirit of Innovation Award. The Spirit of Innovation Award is awarded annually for outstanding innovation in new products, services and/or business practices in the Chattanooga, TN area. The Moveo XP is the first product of its kind, allowing patients who are incapable of supporting full body weight to participate in graded weight-bearing activity at an earlier stage in their rehabilitation.

Jeff Powe, Senior Product Manager for DJO Chattanooga, explains why the Moveo is such an innovative product, “Critical care rehabilitation often requires a period of bed rest that can last up to several weeks in order to obtain medical stability. The devastating complications caused by prolonged immobility directly impact healthcare costs, and more importantly, quality of life. The toll on care providers who are lifting and assisting patients who can’t support their own weight is also a great concern.”

The Moveo XP Rehabilitation Platform is designed to introduce weight-bearing exercise to deconditioned or bedridden patients at a very early point in their physical rehabilitation.. The customized workout intensity lets the patient progress at tolerable levels and allows them and their therapist to see objective, incremental progress which can increase motivation and foster a sense of accomplishment.

Early adopters of the Moveo XP include the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Brooks Army Medical Center, the Mayo Clinics in Rochester, Minnesota, and Phoenix, Arizona; New York Presbyterian Hospital; Nexus Specialty Hospital in Houston, Texas; Solara Hospital in Conroe, Texas; and Grane Healthcare in Pennsylvania.

About the Kruesi Award

The Kruesi award was created to honor the family’s Swiss ancestor, John Kruesi who immigrated in the late 19th century and established the family’s tradition of innovation thru his work with Thomas A. Edison, including work on the incandescent light bulb. His son Paul moved to Chattanooga and founded the American Lava Company, a manufacturer of technical ceramics that became part of the 3M Corporation in 1953.

In addition to the honor and a statue representing innovation, the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce has awarded the company a trip to Switzerland designed to encourage research, experimentation, and to foster a culture which esteems and rewards innovation through interaction with peers in Switzerland.
